What is contents insurance?
Contents insurance, also known as renters insurance, covers items in your home and other personal belongings if they're damaged, lost or stolen. Contents insurance will reimburse you for any items that are lost or damaged. This includes loss or damage due to storm, flooding, fire, or burglary.
You can bundle your contents insurance with portables insurance to cover expensive items if they are stolen or damaged outside your home.
What does contents insurance cover?
Contents insurance include your personal items such as furniture, clothes, fridge, TV and other personal effects. Items such as your laptop, mobile, sporting equipment and jewellery are also covered if damaged within your home or stolen from it.
What is portables insurance?
Portable contents insurance covers any personal effects that you take outside your home. Such items could include your expensive sneakers, handbags, laptops, musical instruments, tools, sporting equipment, glasses, jewellery and clothing. Do you need home contents insurance when renting?
As a renter you might decide to take contents insurance if you want to be reimbursed for loss or damage that could happen to your personal property while renting. Contents insurance is not compulsory.
What does landlords insurance cover? Does it cover tenant contents?
Landlord insurance covers the building structure against damage or accidents and it protects the landlord against other costs they may incur in such events. As a tenant in a rented property your belongings are not covered under landlord insurance.
I'm moving, do I need to have two insurance policies to cover both addresses during this time?
Even if the quantity or value of your contents does not change, you might need a different cover level depending on the area or the type of building you are moving into. If you have an existing
insurance policy you should review all your policy details and provide your insurer with your new address and the moving in date.
Is contents insurance compulsory?
No, it is not, but as the tenant of a rental property the landlord’s insurance only covers the building structure. Without contents insurance replacing personal belongings such as your laptop, clothes and other items mentioned above would not be reimbursed and you would have to arrange to pay for replacement out of your own pocket.
How do I decide if I need contents insurance?
Deciding to take out contents insurance is up to you. A good way to understand if you want to get your belongings insured is to work out if you could afford replacing all your personal items in the event of loss or damage. Does contents insurance cover fixtures and fittings?
Things that are secured to the building or that have been permanently fitted such as light fittings and built-in-robes are not covered by contents insurance. In a rental property these items are usually provided by the landlord as part of the building structure and would be covered when they take out building insurance.
Does contents insurance cover mobile phones?
Yes, your mobile phone is covered if it is accidentally damaged inside your home. You also have the option of adding portables cover if you want to insure it when it’s with you out and about.
Does contents insurance cover accidental damage?
Yes, accidental loss or damage is included in your policy. This means your belongings will be covered if you accidentally damage them or if there is damage or loss in a storm, fire, theft or any other such event.
Does contents insurance cover jewellery?
Yes, your contents insurance covers jewellery items of up to $5000 if they are lost or damaged in a fire, storm, flooding or if they are stolen. Specify individual items of over $5000 to insure them for their full value. To insure jewellery when they are outside your home you can add portables cover.
Does contents insurance cover flood and fire damage?
Yes, your contents insurance will cover you so you can replace your contents if they are damaged or lost in a flood or fire.

What should I cover?
Contents insurance covers the belongings inside your home up to the value that they would be worth if you needed to replace them because of loss or damage due to an accident or extreme event inside your home. Who is Kanopi and who provides the insurance cover?
Kanopi is a data-driven insurance platform that uses the information you provide to generate quotes from their insurance partners. For Sorted customers, the policy is issued by Blue Zebra, an underwriting agency backed by the insurer Youi.
How much contents insurance should I get?
Contents insurance offers the replacement value of your belongings should loss or damage occur. The loss or damage must comply with the terms specified in the policy so read your documentation carefully. The amount which you decide to get insured is totally up to you and will depend entirely on what things you deem important to replace if anything was to happen to them. You could list out your belongings and their value and assess whether they would be worth replacing to get to that decision. How do I make changes to, or cancel my policy?
